Softgel stacks pairing it with CoQ10 are moving fast, wellness creators are calling it "the next NAD+," and search interest keeps climbing.

Some of that attention is earned. Some of it isn't. Here's a clear-eyed look at what PQQ is, what it's actually shown to do, and what to watch for before you add another bottle to your shelf.

What PQQ Actually Is

PQQ is a naturally occurring micronutrient — technically a redox-active cofactor — found in small amounts in foods like kiwi, parsley, green peppers, and fermented soybeans. It was first identified in bacteria decades ago and later found to play a role in human and mammalian cell function, particularly inside the mitochondria, the structures responsible for converting nutrients into usable cellular energy.

  • Underdosed blends. Because PQQ is relatively expensive per milligram, some multi-ingredient formulas include it in amounts far below what's used in published research — enough for a label claim, not necessarily enough to matter.
